’57 Golden Javelin had a seal leak at the prop shaft (actually where the o-ring in the retainer housing meets the lower gearcase half).

Dropped the lower, drained it, put it in my jig, opened it up.  Got a new seal kit & a new tube of 847.  Cleaned everything, scraped all old sealant…ready for work!  Put in the new spaghetti seal, new o-ring on the retainer housing, smidge of 847 on the o-ring, installed everything, set the lower case half & buttoned it up tight.  Everything went together perfectly.  I figured I’d let it set up overnight before I did a pressure test.

Out to the shop the next morning to do a quick 2PSI test in a bucket of water, and what do I see laying in a parts tray on my bench???

….the clutch-dog cradle.  I never put it in the shifter yoke!   %$#*&%  *&%$^^  *&*%$#@!!, and all that.

Man, that blows.   Not much worse than having to open and clean up a gearcase with fresh 847 on it!

I had a mark 30 brought into the shop, was submerged the owner cleaned it well butdid not put ring on the piston so it became a rebuild.

I posted a video of a Martin that had water leaking from the water jacket gasket a few days ago. The head is part of the water jacket. I thought copper coat gasket sealer would be a good choice for the head gasket. Wrong. Didn’t run 2 seconds and I had water in the combustion chambers. Now I’m waiting for more gaskets. My nickname should be Two Timer because I do everything twice. By the way the brown stuff smeared on there is the original sealer. It’s still under the carbon after I remover it.  Nothing takes that stuff off. Even steel wool doesn’t bother it much.   Tubs.

Happens to all of us buddy, don’t be too hard on yourself.   Now you get to pull that apart and clean up all the 847 mess again, what fun!

Please do not try to reuse that gearcase head oring though, same with the spaghetti seal.
