On Post WW2 Champions, like your 1J, I’ve run 20 to 1 in them for years with no problems, I double that if I put one on a hydroplane. Champion "Hotrod" race motors were 4 to 1.

I’ve gone over to synthetic oil but run it at the manufacturer’s recommendation. Even at 10:1 in my Seagulls. The synthetics don’t smoke nearly as much.

          – Twice as much pollution from cattle farts as from outboards. Ever see the movie "Cowspiracy"? . . . 🙄

Oil is the cheapest thing you’ll ever put in an outboard. Rule number one
It prolongs the life of your classics and it kills mosquitoes LOL

I live in a coastal marsh area, I’m all for killing a few mosquitos 😆

Here is a Quote from Lee Holland : " Spark Plugs are cheaper than Rings & Piston" wear. You are dealing with 50 to 100 year old motors. there has to be Wear after that number of years of running. More oil is your only life Insurance not less. Needle bearings in Mercury’s, Chris Craft’s and Champion’s wear also . A little more oil inside of engine also protects when being stored like so many are. Just saying. jr

While several lakes already ban the use of the motors
we collect more lakes are being added to the list
all the time. All of those that promote the use of these
excessive amount of oil contribute to the cause of these
regulations to be enacted. These people see our motors
as air and water polluters. All my life I have seen
places for hunting, fishing, dirt bikes, closed by
people who could care less about offending the people
who have the control over these areas. Offend the wrong
people one time and local governments as well as home
owner associations can lock the gate. Of course you can
run all the oil you want in a barrel.

Agree with Tubs. The discussions around this will never end, but I personally have trouble believing that any motor, outside of racing conditions, really needs more than 16-1. It is hard to believe than any motor with rolling element bearings on both ends of the rods, and on the mains, needs this much.

                      Take a look at this: https://www.epa.gov/oil-spills-preventi … sheen-rule

If enforced, could any 2-cycle outboard be operated with any mix ratio?

As early as the 70’S manufactures were trying to get
customers away from using 4 cycle crankcase oil.
The development of TC-W was to produce a lubricant
to me mixed with gasoline and extend engine life.
As a result of the development of even better additives
(friction modifiers and detergents) today we have
                        TC-W III.

Formula 50-D has long been replaced.
More and even better products are available today
for cleaner burning and longer life while at greatly
reduced amounts. These products weren’t available
when these decades old manuals were written.
You don’t only drive cars the year you were born.
You don’t only use phones made the year you were born.
You wouldn’t take grandma to the doctor, hand him
a medical journal and tell him to only use the treatments
and procedures from the year she was born. Putting
excessive amounts of oil into our air and water when
it isn’t necessary can have lasting effects on this hobby
that you’ll never be able to reverse.
