Actually I am trying to make one good power head out of three junkers. Yes yours is different than mine. The hole in question is the dump hole on my motors, or the end of the line. As long as it is not plugged of it should be working.

March 1, 2019 at 9:14 pm #170019Dale – thanks. The first thing I looked for after pulling the flywheel was any oil leakage at the top of the crank and the slinger area was completely dry, no oily mess at all. Even so, I made sure the oil passages were clear while reassembling.
Good luck with your motor mix and match project!

Don’t give up. It can be done!
Here’s my 54-55-56-57-58-59 Johnny Rudeaneer assembled from spare parts and it runs great! She may not be very pretty but she’s sure loveable!
March 2, 2019 at 12:26 pm #170065Wow Mumbles..Can’t believe you would not have that motor painted up perfect and pretty like your others.
Then again it’s kinda relaxing to just have a good runner that you are not constantly concerned about getting a scratch on it.

March 2, 2019 at 1:36 pm #170068LOL!! Yes I have one of those Johnny Cash specials! It looks very much like yours, even the hood! I tried to sell some parts but got no takers. Came down to fix it or junk it. I was worried my 56 power head was not going to work on my 55 leg. Looks like it works for you. Very funny indeed! Sorry for hijacking your thread.

Yes, you are right, they don’t work normally but on this one I filled in an area on the bottom of the block with Marine Tex epoxy so it would work. Otherwise, there would be a massive water leak going on in there.
The exhaust housing on this motor is from a ’58 Viking which is the same as the ’54 and ’55 Johnnyrude housings and the block is from a ’58 Johnson CD. Here’s a video of it actually running in the test barrel.

A "Boat House Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
