I’m confused about the original fuel pump on my Oliver J2, 5-1/2 hp.
It won’t pump a lick of fuel when bench tested, spinning the motor over
with a drill, trying to get it to suck gas out of a jar.
The B&S pump I tried pumps great.

The Oliver pump only has a diaphragm inside of it, no springs, or check valves.
Several years ago, when I put a new diaphragm in it, I researched what I could,
and someone else with the same pump, also was stymied about the lack of
      check valves, springs, etc.

Today, when looking at a parts manual of the gas tank and hose assembly, they
show one portion, basically a bigger section within the tank hose. By any chance
would this piece have check valves in it, and be necessary for the Oliver pump
      to work?

One can blow air through the inlet or outlet, unlike a normal fuel pump

I had a Clinton that had a similar hose. I believe that is the squeeze pump for the fuel line, which should have some 1-way valves in it.

Interesting about that Oliver gas hose.
I was testing the Oliver pump, trying to suck gas out of a
glass jar, hence no check valves. I wonder if it would have pumped
gas if I had it hooked up with my Merc tank with the squeeze bulb???
Now that I got the B&S hooked up for the third time and pumping
good, I’m not sure I want to mess with it anymore, lol.

I’m thinking that pump might just be too simple for us to grasp.  Looking at the inlet and outlet nipples, one leads to a round hole and the other leads to that long, recessed channel.  Reckon the diaphragm material lying flat on that round hole acts as a check valve as it is allowed to deflect a bit into the channel (open) and alternately lie flat across the hole (closed)?  Just wondering.  Wish I had it here in front of me.

Frank, you may be correct, but the more I try to visualize how it might work,
the more confused I get! I have the pump laying loose, so maybe I’ll pop it
apart again and “ponder” some more, but for now, the Oliver is ready
for a boat ride, using the B&S pump…. if it quits raining.
