Hey guys i have two boats one I’ve had about a year from the 60s with johnson controls found new cables no problem done deal .. now i have just picked up a 1957 mohawk 15 foot runabout with a 1956 johnson 30hp my question is are they different cables on the control end ? the controls definitively have a different style to the handles and housing . I did a quick internet search and the control housing has a rack style set up thanks for any information

Cables up through 1978 will fit your old style control.  But the motor ends have the adjustable plastic nuts, which require different cable locks on the motor.  1979-up are distinctly different in that they do not have removeable ends.

I believe the early cables are 400 series. From ’79 are 479 series.

Yes, the 400 cables fit all the pre-’79 controis.  But if replacing the early “fat” cables, the locks #11 & #21 have to be changed to take the plastic adjusting nuts.

An (1958) example of the old “fat” cables without plastic adjusting nuts.  Locks #11 & #21 are different size.
