I have a 1956 Johnson Javelin 30 hp, need an explanation on serial numbers.
The only numbers I can find are 88967 on the plate under the steering bracket. I was told I should have 6 digits between 199014 and 218513. Is there a possibility that Javelin serial numbers are different? My model number is RJE18. Thanks in advance, Ormand

Enclosed is a list of Johnson serial numbers by model year.   There have been some cases where the actual serial number might fall outside the published range.    Not sure about the numbers stamped on your ID plate under the steering bracket and don’t know where the other numbers you were given came from either.   In addition to the front ID plate on the steering bracket, you should find a round welch plug on the top right rear of the engine block (just above the exhaust cover) about the size of a quarter that will also have the serial number stamped on it.

Ormand, is your motor Canadian? The serial number range would be correct for a Peterborough built motor.  There should be a silver disc the size of a quarter on the side of the block. Usually, the serial number will be stamped into it. Serial number 88xxx would be from the 1940’s so we know that isn’t correct.

Yes, I forgot about the Canadian built motors.  Here’s another listing with both US and Canadian built models and that serial number range would be a 1956 number.  The welch plug should reveal its nationality (if the plug is still present).
