OMC Two Lever Controls

What years did OMC use the smooth sided control boxes or better yet, what years were the ribbed ones used?

The smooth ones started in 1957 or 1958. The ribbed two tone ones are ’56. Before that they were green.

That makes sense as the smooth ones here have ’58 style lettering on them. What year did they change over to the boxy controls?

I am fairly sure the "boxy" ones, as you call them, came out in 1961. A far better control, if you don’t insist on correctness on earlier motors. The "Snap-in" cables came out in 1979.

Here’s one I’m trying to ID. It came with a c.1960 boat, and the "boxed" letters and the "winged" E were both used in 1960, but it’s ribbed…

Could that green have been the original color, or was it just worn down to (chromate) primer??

While we are on the subject does anyone have or know of where I can get the shorter lever for one of these? mine has been repaired at some point in its life. Also a source for the shifter cable motor end would be great if someone has a source.

Mine is black with a red riveted on plate with Evinrude Simplex on it. It is also a ribbed version. About what year is this one from?

That style lettering was ’57.
