I’ve recently acquired a ’53 Sea-Horse 3 & am in the process of bringing back to life. (fingers crossed) It seems to be in good shape after a good cleaning and I’m optimistic. Is there a good source for literature such as owner’s manuals, etc.? I found one on e-bay, but was out-bid at the last moment. Grrr…
August 25, 2021 at 12:00 pm #245454for collecting fine but those are simple motors just feed it fuel/oil fill the gearcase with 90 grade oil check electricals (cracked coil, bad condenser, bad /dirty points, bad plug wires)
as a member why not download yourself a copy of the johnson red book on the MEMBERS ONLY…INNER SANCTOM….LIBRARY…GARRY SPENCER drop box find the red book at the bottom and download it
it has all you need for your JW and general knowledge to fix oldies

August 26, 2021 at 8:35 am #245500It sounds like you are in search of a shop manual but if you really would like an owners manual you might try looking at the collection that Liquid Nirvana has put together. Not sure if he has one for your ’53 Sea Horse….but non-the-less you might enjoy seeing other things that he has there:

There’s neat stuff to look at, but anything I was interested in, like this Elto brochure,
you can’t download……..https://issuu.com/liquidnirvana/docs/1935_-_elto_evinrude_sales_brochure__x___wm_
Prepare to be boarded!
August 26, 2021 at 10:32 pm #245544Yes Buc; I can’t find any way to get around Issuu’s software in that regard either. There might be a way but so far no luck.
I think it’s the contributor’s choice whether to make their content downloadable. Maybe you could contact Liquid Nirvana and get a copy? Probably not but it never hurts to ask.
In the meantime….the only way is to do screen-caps page by page. Tedious and not the best quality….but better than nothing if the information is worthy. Liquid Nirvana’s scans are usually very good quality.
Here’s the first page…..August 26, 2021 at 11:38 pm #245548https://www.dropbox.com/s/tak9d5a748u2dhd/1954%20Evinrude%203%20hp%20-%20OP%20Manual.pdf?dl=0

November 6, 2021 at 4:55 pm #249236Well that worked fine. Is it safe to assume the evinrude & Johnson are pretty much the same? I’d like to secure an actual copy of the owner’s manual that would have come with the motor when new… just for the fun of having it.
I found one on e-bay but got out bid at the last second… Grrrr… I’ll keep looking. Thanks everyone for your help!November 6, 2021 at 6:24 pm #249246I have one. PM sent

On your model the main difference is the outer case and it’s mounting. Those 3’s are nice, smooth runners. When you get it started, check for the cooling system working – you should see just a small spray a few inches below the powerhead. Most of the cooling water exits under water. Most common problem is bad coils with shrunk and cracked insulation if the original coils are still in it. Those same coils were used up into the 1990s in the 2 HP.
