Lost that silly little spring clip that holds the points down on the pivot post …. I replaced it with a C clip
should I worry ?

November 27, 2018 at 10:42 pm #157378I wouldn’t worry about the little things.
I got in the habit of having a magnet close to
the pivot post while installing and removing
those spring clips……. some times the magnet
actually catches the clips when they go flying!Prepare to be boarded!
November 27, 2018 at 11:28 pm #157379I am not worried about loosing/dropping the spring clip I am worried about the C clip not being a suitable replacement… is it ?
it seems to hold enough but the C clip does not go all around the post as much as spring clip does

November 28, 2018 at 7:45 am #157397I guess you are concerned that the points arm may rotate the C-clip off ? Dunno, I guess it is one of those things that would never happen if you wanted it to, but surely will happen if you don’t want it to. My opinion is it will be OK, but don’t try to go to the bank on that.
November 28, 2018 at 8:00 am #157399As long as we’re on the subject, is there an equivalent, generic
replacement for those little clips, such as from McMaster’s, that
outboarder’s have found satisfying?Prepare to be boarded!
November 28, 2018 at 8:54 am #157402I am going to try out those little snap swivels like those used on fishing leaders or single ones used to attached fishing hook leaders and rapala/trolling lures
Sized properly, they can wrap around the post in the small slot to lock down the points set.
I frequently use miniature snap swivels instead of cotter pins to lock in carb linkages (choke)
keeps me from chasing tiny cotter pins
I just snip off the rotating end and keep the locking part

November 28, 2018 at 12:09 pm #157410Great idea on the swivels, as long as they’re not too long,
and interfere with something.Prepare to be boarded!
November 28, 2018 at 12:22 pm #157411agree,,, they come in all sizes ( in my tackle box anyway ) and I know from using them that they work great on carb linkages
I just acquired a 9122 R 1971 9.5 for 60$ coils are shot so I,ll be working the ignition and try out the swivel idea
but I’ll use the magnet idea to catch any clips if they want to fly away again.unfortunately it is missing all the “innards” on the starter post ….

I bought these from McMaster Carr awhile back to use for carb linkages and they work great.
316 Stainless Steel Hairpin Cotter Pin for 7/64″ to 9/64″ Clevis Pin Diameter, 0.031″ Wire Diameter, packs of 25 – 3.10 per pack #92375A002
They slip on a lot easier and are easier to work with than the straight wire or a tiny cotter pin. I tried it on the points post and they seem to work ok, although a little tight. Maybe the next size up would be better to use for the post.
