I have a 67 Evinrude 6hp that the plastic starter gear is cracked. Is there a video that anyone knows of that I can watch? Hoping that I do not have to let spring uncoil in order to remove the pin from the gear. Any thoughts or suggestions would be well appreciated.. Thanks all .Russ….

you can probably just unbolt the top tilt it aside……….. remove the slip pin ……..install the new gear and reinstall the cross split pin

or follow the video change the cord while in there and tackle the top gear issue while parts are out and easy to work on 🙂

One thing the video doesn’t show is there are two types of the lower plates which hold the end of the spring. The early ones don’t have to be loosened tp remove the spring as the end of the spring winds into it. The later type which this one might be, captures the spring in a slot and the plate must be removed or loosened to remove the spring. It isn’t really necessary to remove the spring at all unless you are checking or replacing the small nylon bearing in the bottom plate. The top of the spring engages in a pin so it is quite easy to put back together.

It is pretty common for those pinions to crack along the opening for the roll pin…I wouldn’t worry about it too much unless a piece has broken off. And yes, there are two styles of these recoils..The early style has two separate aluminum spindles that the roll pin runs through, along with the pinion gear http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1968&hp=6&model=6802A&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=Carburetor+And+Starter+Group
The later style has a single plastic spindle that the roll pin runs through http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1975&hp=6&model=6504R&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=Rewind+Starter
I suppose it would be possible to run a shorter loose fitting pin through there (driving the roll pin out) that is roughly the length of the diameter of the spindle, then sneak the pinion off….But that seems like a long shot, you don’t want to accidentally let that rewind spring uncoil on its own, might damage it…
