Putting the carb back together on my PO-15.
When I took the throttle butterfly off the shaft
for disassembly, the "flat" was facing down.
The parts manual would almost suggest it goes up.
      Q. Which is correct?

There’s quite a bit of slop in the throttle shaft bore.
      Q. Would that affect operation on this type of carb?
The bottom shaft bore is a dead hole, but the upper
      shaft bore goes to atmosphere.

      Thanks!

Looking down the throat of this PO Vacturi, I can see the cutout is at the bottom. Is that what you mean?

Thanks Mumbles, looks like I’m good to go!
Looks like your carb has a crack to fix.
Any thoughts on the sloppy throttle shaft bore?

Air leaks around the shaft will usually affect the idle quality of a motor but since these motors are sucking in a fair amount of air anyway, it might not matter too much. Heck, hang on and run it full throttle!

I silver soldered the worn areas of the throttle shaft.
That was the easy part….. then ground, machined
on the lathe, and filed them back to kind of original
size. I should have soldered the areas oversize instead
of just back to normal, but it is tighter than before!

Another way to fix an air leak is to drill out the carb body and install new bushings made out of brass tubing. This will work unless the shaft itself is badly worn. Making a new shaft is another story.

Mumbles, I thought about the "bushing" idea, but like you say, if the shaft is
worn bad, it’s not going to cure the slop.
Making the shaft "round" again with the silver solder helped, and
then I came up with the idea to put a "shaft seal" on the top side
so it can’t suck air around the shaft…… not saying it will work,
but not out much. One O-ring, a spring, and a washer!

Thank you all – it’s the first time I’ve had a really good look at the Vacturi carburetor Johnson used on their POs.
                    . . 🙂

You must have been a Chevy type of guy and never had anything to do with Fords! 😀

Because of Harry Johnson’s failure to honor a verbal agreement on a handshake with Dad, Johnson was a dirty word in our house. When offered employment By Ole Evinrude and Lou Johnson in 1928, Dad thought the Johnson brothers could not be trusted went with Ole at Elto in Experimental Engineering. In less than a year he was working at Evinrude with Irgie Irgins and Denny Watkins. . . 😉
