You may want to review and try this product. There are two parts to it. First goes on the tank before the decal the second is applied over the decal.
The last I spoke with American Outboard they will send you another decal if your first attempt fails. Follow American Outboards directions as already mentioned. I would use the clear coat a half hour or so before applying the decal.

Mumbles, thanks for the link. Am still weighing "vinyl vs. water slide",
but glad I have both options now.
Goman, I’m a little concerned about that product "softening"
the decals that I was warned from the vendor as being "delicate"
already. Have you used it before?
          Thanks!

I’ve been applying water slide lacquer decals for over 50+ years. Soak decal in warm water allowing it to loosen, then gently slide decal from paper backing onto final surface. Absolutely no necessary decal preparation has been needed in the past such as spraying surface with clear prior to the water soak. The large lacquer based decal that I purchased was just poor quality, as far as I was concerned. As previously mentioned, there were small cracks throughout the decal without me flexing or curling the decal prior to water immersion.

Jerry from Neilsville was where I purchased my vinyl decal. Excellent quality. As previously mentioned from George, tank preparation surface is absolutely necessary for proper vinyl adhesion. There were no wrinkles, bubbles or unsightly surface imperfection prior to and after clear coating.

Unfortunately, no phone number/email/address for Jerry. As a backup idea, take your lacquer water slide decal to a printer and have them reproduce it in vinyl. I did it with the following image of the first year Bombardier 1968 Sea Doo. Quality almost second to none.

Sincerely hope the aforementioned info helps.

Seaflash, thanks for the additional information.
              Neat looking Sea-Doo!
I’m going to run my Ski-Doo in the garage today
and get it prepped…… after all, first day of
              winter today!

I’ve used the micro sol with good results. The first part from what I remember gets the paint ready to accept the decal. Some worry if you soak the decal too long it will not stick as good. The second part will settle any bumps or creases or other imperfections you get especially around bends. I still had some minor cracks and dings. After I put on my final clear coat I used a fine point permanent felt marker for touch up. You might want to read up on how some of the model guys apply the big decals on boats and planes and such. I’m sure not an expert.

Sorry I didn’t mention it was for the water slide decals.

Goman, Youtube videos showed some big vinyl decal applications
on car hoods, etc., but didn’t see any big water slide videos.
Would like to see a video from 1950 Johnson’s paint / decal shop!
Thanks for the micro sol info.

For my PO decals…and other long Johnson Evinrude tank decals I use a wallpaper tray…a long one…for soaking. Yes I also use MicroSol to set the decal. Decals after soaking typically have almost no adhesive left to adhere them. So clearcoating matters.

Used very warm…not hot water with a DROP of soap to allow the decal to ease off the paper. Do not force the decal. Use the paper to support it on the tank and ease the paper out from under the decal after you get it in position. Once the decal is on the tank…I use a spray bottle with the same soapy water to keep the decal floating as in move it gingerly into its final spot

Don’t worry about wrinkles…the MicroSol or MicroSet will take care of those that form on compound curves like corners.

Some older decals may require a bit of clear coat. Use something that will be comparable with you final clear coat.

I haven’t seen any videos of large water slide decal being put on. I try doing a trial or practice run on things I don’t do a whole lot of. You may set up and try cutting newspaper the size of the decal and try to slide it off of some wax paper for example just to see how it goes. When you go through the motions it shows how you can to do it better.
