Variable pitched props have been around since 1898. Caille had them for many years. several companies produced various configurations in the early ’50s. One I recall had fixed blades and was sold with the idea that if you damaged a blade, you could replace it cheaper than buying a new propeller. Another was spring loaded so at an idle it had a lower pitch. This gave it a slower idle and faster acceleration. At faster speeds water pressure overcame the spring tension and increased the pitch for fast cruising. One was adjustable by loosening a set screw and turning an adjusting collar. The one was adjustable by remote control. . . 😀
