I just acquired a 1984 Evinrude Yachtwin with F-N shift. I want to check the impeller. How does the shift rod disconnect? And are there tricks to getting the LU back on and the water tube and shift rod aligned?

      Thanks!

I just did the Johnson version last summer and if I remember correctly, there’s only two small bolts holding the gearcase on. Once they are undone, the gearcase should pull away from the exhaust housing. The shift rod slides right out of the gearcase to as it isn’t hooked to anything inside. It just activates the spring clutch.

Spot on, Mumbles! A little tugging and out she came.

The O-ring did not come out with the shaft. I’m guessing it is stuck up there. Am I going to have to pull the powerhead?

          Thanks!

look up the housing with a flashlight and try to fish it out with a piece of stiff wire with the tip bent 90 degrees

but first see if … you can see it up there maybe none was installed or failed to be replaced by the previous owner
