Good eye mumbles, that cam sure “seems backwards”. But, perhaps the butterfly linkage is backwards, perhaps the butterfly is spring loaded to favor the fully open position, but that doesn’t make alot of sense… I don’t have any experience with this model either, but it just seems like the butterfly is spring loaded in the open position…..
December 27, 2020 at 9:00 pm #226120From memory, I believe the cam pushes the butterfly closed at idle and a spring opens it at full throttle. Just the opposite of later model motors. Reason? Lifting the tiller handle also pushes the butterfly closed to slow down without moving the magneto lever. Lower the tiller, and the butterfly opens again (by a spring) and off you go again. Hope I got that right. It’s been a long time.
As for the mark, I’ll see if I can dig up that info. Later….
EDIT: I checked the “Red” service manual and it does not mention the mark. My guess is the one you are looking at is the one.

Prepare to be boarded!

This explanation makes sense Frank. These early QDs seem to have many little engineering differences/experiments, would love to work on one someday…

December 28, 2020 at 7:34 pm #226213Thanks frankr and everyone. Your right , the cam closes the butterfly at idle , spring opens it up. Since mine has the twist grip throttle raising the handle does nothing. Where as the 52 model does idle down when handle is raised. The throttle is a lever on 52 and back. This is a super clean 53 with low hours. Hopefully got the carb right because I really want to use this one. Think it’s a low hour motor. Took the lower off today and the 6 screws holding the skeg have never been off. Still paint on them. Gearset was immaculate. Just going to replace all the seals and get it back together. Maybe I’ll have a warm day in January I can give it a test run. Thanks!
