Hello . I now have a question about Quad rings. Again I am interested in only OMC engines from 1954 to1958 5 1/2 to 35 HP. I have read post’s here in the past about substituting a Quad ring for crankshaft seal in the carbon lower engine seal instead of using an “O” ring as originally designed. Looking for opinions regarding this also any pro’s or con’s. Do they last any longer than the original “O” ring setup? Would they be used in any other seal application on a OMC motor other than crankshaft seal? Regards Bill,
December 17, 2021 at 10:19 am #251242The crankshaft moves up and down within the limits of the bearings and thrust washers. As it does so, the carbon seal must slide on the shaft in order to stay in contact with the sealing surface of the lower bearing. The quad ring is better suited for this sliding action, whereas an o-ring will tend to roll before starting to slide or may not slide at all, causing the carbon to momentarily lose contact with the bearing. At least that is my understanding. What I don’t understand is why the made the change on the Big Twins and not the 22 cu. in. 18/20hp motors. Whatever, I personally choose to use the quad ring across the board.

Frank when you say you use quad rings across the board is it just the 1950’s big twin OMC that can utilize them in the carbon seal or are there other areas of application on the engine you can use them? Would you have a part number for the big twin carbon seal quad ring and a preferred place to buy from? Also as I stated I am primarily involved with OMC engines from 5 1/2 to 35 hp. year 1954 to 1958. Is there any areas of application on these other HP. engines a quad ring would preferred over an “O” ring?

December 18, 2021 at 10:32 am #251282Thanks Frank. – 214 1” x 1 1/4′ x 1/8 MC master Carr 25 pcs. for $6.72 I can deal with that nicely. Also the 22cid. 18 to 20 horse application would that also include the 1956 Johnson and Evinrude 15 HP. engines? Regards Bill,
