      I think I am missing a Shift Lever O-Ring (303191) number 26
      The lever goes in and out a bit too freely
      Does the O -Ring go in the space indicated in the picture?

        No it is in a groove on the shaft. Take the assembly apart from the inside, pull the shaft out, and you will see the o ring.

        Very good ideal to change it while you have it that far.

          The in-out slop is taken care of by the flat/notched interlock bar which holds it in.

              Yes, the spring at the top applies pressure that holds the shifter in place, in addition to the detent function.
