Have run a 1954 RD15A 25 HP a lot this summer. Runs excellent and idles very nicely. At starting it does not like much choking and often takes several pulls or so to start. When it starts it runs slower than I would expect. (starts at a medium idle.) I think it would start more easily if the rpm was increased somewhat. Does anyone have any advice?
Thank you.
OK, I’m assuming that throttle/mag plate is up against its neutral stop/limit when you are starting the engine. Perhaps the cam pick up is a little retarded. I don’t know if this engine has linkage that opens the throttle slightly when the choke is pulled, I’m thinking it does not.
My 1954 RD-16 has the choke linkage the Don is talking about that opes the throttle a bit when choking. It usually starts on second pull when cold, at a pretty fast idle, but that could just be where I have the throttle set. Idles nice and slow when warm too. Once warm it starts easy like a Johnson should.
