      Hi
I recently restored a Johnson seahorse 5hp motor tn-27. However after putting it together I notice my starter pawls not engaging.
I feel like the friction ring is not having a lot of friction.
Did anybody encounter this problem and what is the fix?
      Thank you

Don’t feel bad, (almost) everybody makes the same mistake the first time. The equalizer spring must be pre-installed up on the shoulder of the spindle before inserting the spindle into the pulley.

          Hello
Old post but this project was on my storage as I was moving and getting back now.
So looks like the spring is installed on my shoulder of the pulley before installing into pulley. But it doesn’t generate enough friction to move the pawls out.

Could it be that I sprayed lubricant inside spring area and I messed it up?

Or is my spring broken? Or is there suppose to be some sort of washer?

see pic of tn26.. hopefully much like a tn27 recoil ?? parts wise anyway

I think you can make your own springs search the site or ask for the info here on aomci

It is supposed to be lubricated, so that is not the problem. I dunno, from here it looks like the spring is upside down (??). Never saw anybody do that before.

                  Hi
I didn’t quite figure out looking at the pictures if they are the same or not. Here is a pic of the spring. I just can’t seem to figure out how the friction is generated to kick out the pawl.

The spring goes like you have it laid out in these pictures. Big end first goes in the equalizer ring, insert spindle, and push small end of spring up onto shoulder of spindle as in picture I previously posted. THEN care must be taken to insert spindle into rope pulley without without the spring jumping off the shoulder. It will work when correctly assembled, believe it.

The friction of the spring around the shoulder of the spindle makes the equalizer ring want to stand still as you start to pull the rope. That makes the 3 little pawl springs pull out the pawls as they run out ahead of the stationary equalizer ring.

Very simple device that flabbergasts everybody.

I uploaded a video on YouTube on my problem.
                      Thank you

I followed your instructions carefully. I will upload video of assembly and maybe you can find out something I am missing.
                        Thank you
