Anyone have a photo of remote throttle hookup for the late 1980s/early 1990s 15 HP Johnsons? I have 1989 and 1991 models (they are the same) and want to put one on a hydroplane and can’t figure out how to interface the dead man’s throttle – I do not want to permanently butcher up the motors, and want to keep carb and spark advance both functional with the remote throttle so I can still use the motors on regular boats.

This is not the racing version, so it does not have the fitting on the carb for this.

The hydroplane currently has throttle cable end for 1950’s – 1970s Johnsons, but I can change the cable end and/or the cable. I’ve never seen a remote hookup for this type of motor, so need a photo or outline drawing.

      Thanks!
      Dave

They make an adapter kit for recreational boats. I notice the throttle adapter varies between 1989-1990. I’ve never rigged one, so that’s all I know.

I have a 1991 9.9 that was remote on a sailboat. The throttle ran right out the front. My engine’s throttle was cut when removed from the sailboat, but I will take and post a picture to show you how it was set up. I would have used a normal throttle hookup to a two handle control, but they didn’t. I will post the picture as soon as it stops raining, so I can take the picture. I posted looking for the control box side wiring for mine just yesterday. Great little motor and very little use on that sailboat.

Attached are the pictures showing how throttle is attached. Mine has a plastic bracket that holds the throttle in place, but you should be able to easily fabricate something that would work and still look good.

Just as a follow up, I see why they couldnt use a standard connection. The throttle doesnt extend beyond the cowling as it would on my other 9.9 electric start.

There is a bracket that bolts to the stbd side of the lower cowl for the remote shift cable connection, it bolts through where those little plastic pins are located in the lower pan…

Frank and Froggy – Thanks for the info! It looks like only 2 or 3 of those parts in the $142.00 #0398032 kit are for the throttle and the rest are for the shift which I don’t need. My motors (I have 5 well-used 15s from a failed resort) are not electric start like the one in Froggy’s photos, so I’ll have to look and see if the recoil starter is in the way.

This design, along with the gearshift hookup, looks like it was added on by Rube Goldberg after the motor was originally designed without remote controls in mind! Kind of like my older 9.5 Johnson with the somewhat rare aftermarket remote adapter kit.

On my two 1991’s, I have mounted in that throttle access hole, an aftermarket lanyard/kill switch after the ones halfway up the tiller got intermittent cutting the motor out – no way was I going to pay over $100.00 for that replacement switch assembly!…..but I don’t really need the lanyard/kill switch, so that can go.

Between Froggy’s photos and the accessory kit parts diagram from Frank, it looks like what I need are parts #9, 10, and 24 in the diagram in the link below ….and parts #9 and 10 are now replaced by part # 0435448 Throttle Connector Assembly (For $14.75, I’ll take a gamble that I can make that work!). Part #24 looks suspiciously like the clip that has been used on the end of the remote throttle cables in the 1950s–1970s, and I have those with the cable end.

I’ll order the #043548 and let you guys know how this comes together. Hopefully it was not designed to just fit electric start models!

Yes, that is the kit…But, I am surprised it does not include the bracket for steering that mounts on the two holes in front of the engine, just below the lower engine cowl. There is a hole in this bracket where the conventional stop switch (included in this kit) is mounted….

That is surprising that the steering bracket is not included, since everything else to adapt to remote is.. Fortunately, I don’t need that bracket for a hydroplane. I’ll be bolting a metal bar or angle iron to those two mounting holes and attache my steering cables to the ends of the bar.

                      I found the bracket:

After looking at the pics, I took a look at one of my motors and it looks like ordering the #043548 and using the 1950’s/1960’s throttle cable end will work. There looks to be just enough space under the recoil starter (that sits off to the side of the powerhead) to hook up if I reroute the stop switch wires that go to the tiller. I may have to remove the block that anchors the tiller’s throttle cable that hooks up elsewhere.
                        Part ordered!
