I am a student working on getting this motor running again and I need to pull the cover off. Does anyone know how I can pull it off or if there is a specific tool for pulling it off? Thanks in advance.
March 15, 2022 at 2:38 pm #256278You’ll need a puller similar to this one. Assuming you don’t have one, you can usually rent one of these at your local auto parts store. The bolts will thread into the 3 holes closest to the flywheel center. Do not use a wide jaw puller that grabs onto the outside edge of the flywheel.

March 15, 2022 at 2:58 pm #256282DONT Run the bolt in to far they will hit the coils. put a nut on loose to keep the threads from deforming.

March 15, 2022 at 3:57 pm #256283Have you removed the ratchet nut, it has standard right hand thread. The flywheel can sometimes be stubborn, it takes technique not force to remove, Mercury Service Tools are nice but, there are work arounds, I assume the magneto is a Repco/Phelon Model 514 C (stamped on top of flywheel an magneto plate) Coils are hard to come by, but, OMC coils can be adapted. Mercury KE4 was introduced in late 1940s and renamed Mark 7 to conform to new model name system.
Let us know how you are doing and share photos if you can. Nothing we like better than helping out with an old outboard project. There are many here with both sound advice and encouragement.

March 17, 2022 at 2:05 pm #256390I successfully removed the cover but the coils were cracked and had corrosion all over. I looked at 2 websites I’ve used for getting new parts and both had priced a new coil a little over a hundred dollars. Is that a normal price for coils (part #398-716)? And what are the best websites for ordering new parts? Thanks in advance.

Those coils are no longer being manufactured
so if you can even find them they will be expensive.
However with a little work you can adapt these
common OMC style coils .

Here is a video showing how I did one.

March 18, 2022 at 10:32 am #256443seen your video before but I still marvel looking at it to solve a high price problem with commonly available coils 🙂

March 19, 2022 at 9:00 am #256481Look on Ebay for Military Standard Coil they fir right on Mercury Bendix magneto but you need to reroute spark wire. Changing to Phelon magneto is good if you can find one but they cost about $150 plus with all the parts. I have installed OMC coils on Bendix magneto and they work good.
