I hope someone here can provide me some insight- i want to pull the power head (engine) from a 1959-60 scott 40hp but the repair manual simply states “remove the screws holding the power head to the adapter plate and lift off”
i have removed some but i either can’t see the others or can’t access them with a hex-head wrench…
anyone have any suggestions on how to do this?

I think you need a bristol spline wrench . That is what I had to use on my Scott 1-30. If you think you have them all out, heat the base up real good with a hair dryer (or carefully with a heat gun) then give the block a rap with a rubber mallet. I had to do that with a Mark 30. Some times they put sealant on the gaskets at the factory which acts like glue. I believe my wrench was a 1/4 inch.

i appreciate the info- i will look at the screw again but from memory it was a 3/16″ allen/hex head screw… not sure if they were replaced at some point in the past. Any tips on how to get access to them all? that seems to be my problem at this point

I can confirm on my 1960 40hp that these are hex head screws that require 3/16″ allen key.

And after much struggle with the allen wrench i was able to loosen 8 of these 13 screws. They hold the powerhead to the adapter plate. The service manual states “Remove the powerhead to adapter plate retaining screws, including those partially hidden by the motor support and shift handle, then lift of the complete powerhead assembly”

I can’t access the ‘partially hidden’ screws… any suggestions on how to get to these?

remove the 8 screws that hold the adapter plate/ powerhead on then remove the adapter plate from the powerhead.

thats kind of a ‘cart before the horse” scenario… i can’t access the screws that hold the adapter plate because they are covered by the powerhead…

Well, for anyone who reads this… the trick was to tilt the motor up to get access to the last screws.. i did manage to get all of the screws out… but still a real PITA..

No matter how complicated, If it went together, It can come apart. Mercurys always test me and those short 9.5/9.9 Johnson Evinrudes. Just getting the side covers off and putting them back on matching the holes with the proper bolts.PITA. When it’s a hobby, it’s fun. When you are trying to make money at it, it’s a different story.
