      Hello,

I acquired a very nice 1957 Evinrude Fastwin. It is in very nice shape except it has a broken steering bar. I have a replacement. Do I need to remove the powerhead? Any other tips?

      Thanks!

Steering bar??  Do you mean the steering “handle” where you could attach cable/pulley steering?  If so, then you do not need to remove the powerhead or gearcase to change this part.

Simply disconnect the three upper motor mounts, but be careful the rubber loves to break.  Next, the lower clamshell needs to come off so you can disconnect the lower mounts.  Now, the powerhead, exhaust housing, gearcase will lift off the transom bracket/swivel housing so the steering handle can be replaced…

OK, thought so.  Do you have any questions on the procedure I outlined?
