My ran pretty good at home. I dropped a cylinder on my first outing with it. This is my first time looking at this particular ignition and I am a bit confused as to where to start to find the problem.

Check all the wiring, make sure it’s all good and not shorting. Condensers may be a problem. See the thread on condensers, similar motor being talked about there.
My favorite series of Johnson also. The KA motors are very nice running when you get it all sorted out.

Those motors like drinking their fuel mixed at 8:1 ratio.

I might have a couple spare condensors. I’ll have to check this weekend

These motors run good but do not have a water pump they rely on suction from moving in the water to cool them so will get hot running in a barrel. When they start on a boat run fast for a few seconds to get water flow started then slow down and should be ok

All water line connections must be sealed, any leaks will allow air in at an idle and they will then overheat. . . 😉
