Evaporust works very well. Might need phosphoric acid solution for extreme cases.

Vinegar will work, but it takes time. Like a week or two or even more.

Electrolysis or muriatic acid are other options. The acid is extremely hazardous so precautions must be used. I’ve heard of powdered citric acid being used to but I’ve never tried it.

I used a combination of AutoZone tank deruster and muriatic acid twice with a box of new screws in the tank the whole time, and I shook it a lot the whole time until I got no rust out and I could get no rust on my finger when I shoved and it apparently has fixed the problem. Hope this helps every tank is different and some may take more some may take less

Note I did the rust remover and the Muratc acid separately and I did them until I liked what I got for my finger And water washout and there was no rust coming out when I poured it out and yesIt took a couple of days. Rust removal and prevention is a process I have been a painter and it is a problem take your time and get it to where you’re happy with it or pay someone else to do it.

I have used electrolysis on several of the he standard 6 gal. Johnson pressure tanks with good success. You need to get as much of the loose stuff out as possible before the process.. Works with just a battery charger and washing soda. Attached was previously posted by another member.

What was the stuff Model A rebuilders used to coat the tanks? Red Coat or something like that. Some where out there is a very nice OMC tall tank I had vatted then nickel plated.

I have an old clothes drier. Fill tank1/3 full with water and add Pinesol. Add a good handful of drywall screws. Pack it tight with blankets and tumble. Whistle clean.
