I’m trying to determine what the decal looked like for the 8.5HP Sea King model 492.  This model was made in 1935-38.  Per the 1935 Wards catalog picture, mine does not have 1935 features.  It may be a 1938 but I first need pictures of the 1936 and 1937 Wards Spring and Summer Sea King catalog pages showing the motor to check the decals and motor features. Any ’36-’37 pics out there?

I purchased this carb cover at Tomahawk this year and have acquired the correct
motor to put it on now, thanks to a response on the web.

I saved these pictures of a M#- 492 Sea King because
its decals look as though they could be the originals.
They may be helpful if you can get more examples.

Tubs, Thanks for the pics.  I’ll consider using all or part of those decals when the time comes.  Your  side decal looks correct to me for that model. The tank is done except for the buffing, or was this tank painted originally ?

Buccaneer, thanks for your ad which I haven’t seen before. Your advert is 1937.  You can verify that with the Evinrude guide book which shows that those 3 Evinrude-built models, especially the 8806, were only available as a group in 1937.  The Wards model numbers , such as 8806, are shown in Wards ads on the line showing the price for ordering.

For ad ID, these are some of Wards model numbers, found in their ads, of Evinrude-built motors:

            1935– 8394, 8800, 8801, 8802, 9186

            1936————————-8802, 8803

            1937—————————————-8806, 8807, 8808

            1938——–8763, 8764,————————-8807, 8808

            1939———————-8765, 8766,————————–8809, 8810, 8811

            1940—————————————————————————–8811, 8812, 8815, 8816, 8817, 8818

Was your tank originally polished? I’m no help to you there.
I find the best indicator if a tank was polished is found under what remains of an
original decal. However you often don’t have any remaining decal. Then looking
at the welded seams, how well were they polished and is there any noticeable
difference between the seam and the rest of the tank. I also look at the underside
of the tank. Its usually the best persevered as to how smooth the surface was
                originally.

I suspect my 492 is the last version of 1938 due to the high serial number of 00706 compared to other smaller ’37-’39 Sea Kings I have which are in the 400 range.  I’ll check those to see if they appear polished.  One is a nice original.

Still looking for a photo of Wards Sea Kings in their 1936 catalog.
