Decided to clean off the charred paint and decals today.
Under the paint bubbles I found this almost dent free tank. No buffing just stripper and steel wool.

Wondering about the metalurgy itself, it reminds me of the metal used to manufacture the wing tanks in my 1946 PA-12 SuperCruiser floatplane. We replaced the original tanks a decade ago, and mechanics referred to them as having been made from “wartime stainless” which was in surplus post WWII.

The Midget tank looks and feels like the same material to me?

Does this information sound at all familiar to anyone?

I know that the Midget tanks were originally painted aluminum color, but I’m thinking I may just leave it “as-is”.
