I think this is a 1946 Midget but I don’t know for sure. I also want advice on how to get an “owners manual” so I can 1) get it running and 2) then do a restoration as I’m not sure whether the lower unit should be painted or not.

64 indicates 1946, and EA that it was made by Evinrude.

I have it as the same bore and stroke as the Evinrude Ranger, and the pre-war Elto Pal.

Gary’s dropbox has diagrams for the 1941 Pal, and the 1940 Ranger, but I have no firsthand knowledge of what parts are common…

Good information provided…thank you. Now that I know that I have a 1946 Sea King Midget, sold by Montgomery Ward, and made by Evinrud…I have a question that I cannot answer from looking at pictures of fully restored motors. I have a spark plug but no wire and I want to know the connection from the plug to….where?? I know it has to pick up the feed from the magneto, or whatever it’s called on an outboard motor. All else appears to be in workable condition…but would like someone to reply as to the wiring detail. Thank you, very much.

plug wire looks to be a ring on the spark plug end. the coil end is most likely a solder on or push in.

Hey, Tubs. Thank you so much for the picture…exactly what I needed. I’ve taken a couple of pictures with my cell phone that I’d like to share with you and ask another question once you’ve received the pictures. I think the motor I have is in quite good shape and I’ve ordered the decals as the condition of the decals on my motor are a bit ratty.

I have a Midget — I paid way too much for it, but it was a low-hours machine with original paint and decals, and is so d–mn cute

– The lower unit is painted silver
– The spark plug wire threads out through the right “cheek” at the rear — you’ll see a notch in the “cheek”.
– I also have Ranger, and from a visual perspective, the the differences between the Midget and the Ranger are limited to the advance lever, tank, cowlings and the method of attaching the tiller handle.
– the motor originally came with an exposed spark plug lead (no boot) which I had to change after getting one poke too many while trying to drive without the tiller handle that got lost in the lake.

The carb is very small and therefore has little vacuum — you need keep that tiny poppet valve nice and clean or the motor won’t inhale enough fuel and air.

I have a Midget…..Here are a couple pictures before and after. I used Ford tractor grey paint and some new decals. It had a major dent in the tank.
I had to cut a hole in the opposite side of the tank and use a block of wood to push the dent out. Then I had my prop fixer guy weld up the hole. Cute little motors!
Don’t run it much, it’s kinda temperamental to run. Mine is a 1938, it is a little different where the tiller handle attaches to the motor. Might be the first year for this little bubblier.
