Hello all. New guy here on AOMCI. Maybe someone can set me straight.
I want to change the impeller on my 61 Monkey Ward Seaking 5hp. I’ve researched the subject heavily after I realized you cannot just drop the gear case and uncouple the shift linkage from below. The Powerhead needs to be removed to access from the top.
Great, I said. After having removed the 7 screws, however, the powerhead will not budge. Could it be held in place by the gasket? I don’t want to pry too hard or bang anything to hard.
After I break it free, I believe I need to uncouple the throttle lever. But, does one disconnect the control knobs, or remove the carb in order to tip the powerhead out of the way?
I see there are topics on this forum that already discuss this, but they gloss over my specific questions. Model # GG18736
Thanks, Adam

August 21, 2022 at 2:27 pm #264645Lessee if I can remember this correctly. Remove the vertical throttle shaft from the side (makes it a lot easier to reassemble). Disconnect the carb links 9 & 10 from the needle valves. That stuff just snaps together. Remove the choke knob. Disconnect the fuel hose. Now the powerhead should be ready to lift off, assuming you have all 7 screws removed. Yes, it probably will destroy the gasket.
Hope that’s all accurate. It’s been a few years since I’ve done one.

Would you get a replacement gasket or just use “form-a-gasket”?
I plan on also replacing the oil seals and o-rings if I can find them. But, I see that iboats.com does not go below 10hp for some reason.
Also, does the water intake screen (55) just pop out?
Thanks again, Adam

Gearcase is basically same as 5.5hp Johnson/Evinrude
You must be looking at a different parts list than I am. If you are speaking of the water intake screen behind the prop, it would be indeed rare to need to remove it. But if removal is needed the plug below it must be drilled and tapped and a screw used to yank it out.

I got the powerhead off and everything apart. The impeller was rock hard and in about a half dozen pieces.
I see they have a replacement on Amazon. If I wanted to give my business to a smaller business, is there a good source of these old parts online? Like I said, iboats does not have them.
