Forgive my ignorance, but what was the intended purpose of the carbon seal kit for the TN-27 & TN-28? My TN-27 appears to not be fitted with those parts, is that any case for concern?

It is an improved seal for the crankshaft. Keeps water out of the crankcase.

Thanks, Frank. I figured it would be you who had a quick answer to that one. If it isn’t there should I be concerned? I’m not planning on this being a heavy use motor, just one of the collection that will be run from time to time.

Most of those motors have defective or missing seals. Good old dependable Johnsons, they run anyway. Probably wear out faster though. But salt water is death if it gets into the crankcase.

Ken Hall in CT has the carbon seals in stock.
