So,1946Zephyr, how do you recognize the 5 bolt lowers?
November 23, 2016 at 11:05 am #47888You have the 4 smaller 7/16 hex bolts and the larger 9/16 hex bolt at the very back of the exhaust housing. It was used on the following models:
10 hp 1955 – 1957
12hp (not sure of years)
15hp 1955 – 1956
18hp 1957 – 1973
20hp 1966 up
25hp 1969 -1976Those are just my guesstimates, but they’re close. It was a very common lower in the J/E and Gale motors. Gale brands had the 12hp deluxe motors with it too.
November 23, 2016 at 3:31 pm #47902So these bolts (2 different sizes) are under the hood (?) where the exhaust bolts onto the power head? I thought "lower" meant the bottom half of the whole motor. The blade, skeg, and covers for the right angle gear and so on(?) If I’m going to shop for this I need to know what it looks like.
Thank you. All of you. (what a great fraternity) (with apologies to any women)
November 23, 2016 at 3:50 pm #47907Paul, The bolts are not under the hood. The bolts are on the lower portion of the exhaust leg where the lower unit connects. There will be the usual (4) 7/16′ hex head bolts that go up from the bottom and thread into the exhaust housing. The fifth bolt is a larger 9/16" hex head bolt that threads into the lower unit from the top down through a hole in the back of the exhaust housing. I do not have a picture at my disposal at the moment, but I own multiple OMC 10hp motors in each configuration. I can post a picture of each this evening after I get home from work if someone has not already posted some. 😉

November 23, 2016 at 3:55 pm #47908November 23, 2016 at 7:57 pm #47923I totally agree that the 9.5 motors are down on power in the 10hp class, I have 1970 that is pretty good, but I have run both brands, J&E that would not plane a boat as was posted by outbdnut. These motors have several advantages that I really like, but power isn’t one of them. My 110 Mercury’s are significantly more powerful than the 9.5’s, but they really need the right prop. Too often they were equipped with 10p props that they can’t spin with any kind of weight. The horsepower really falls off on them if they can’t get to full RPM. We can easily top 20mph with our 63, but not with too much weight in the boat.
As for the older Johnson/Evinrude 10hp motors, I agree that they were much more powerful than the 9.5’s that replaced them. We just picked up an early 60’s Johnson 10hp last night that came with a boat we purchased. This needs some TLC to get it to run, the previous owner replaced the coils and couldn’t get it to run after that, but it is in pretty good cosmetic condition. We will be looking to repair this to good running condition and then sell it as it doesn’t really fit our collection. We also have a good running 1974 Johnson 15hp with 1 new coil that we will also have for sale. It is in good/average cosmetic condition.

November 24, 2016 at 5:21 pm #47965I have a 58 QD19 that the lower unit seems to be holding up fine just check it for leaks motor still looks and runs great usually starts on 1 or 2 pulls even after setting a year or so.
Doug
how is it motors multiply when the garage lights get
turned off?November 24, 2016 at 6:13 pm #47970quote ddwilson:I have a 58 QD19 that the lower unit seems to be holding up fine just check it for leaks motor still looks and runs great usually starts on 1 or 2 pulls even after setting a year or so.Just monitor the gear lube frequently, fix leaks if they occur, and you will be OK…It’s like others have said, the bronze lower driveshaft bushing and the driveshaft that will fail if water leaks in….Those 10hp driveshafts are getting real tough to find, even tougher without damage in the lower bushing area….
Too bad one of our machinist members can’t extend some 9.5hp driveshafts to fit the longer 10hp exhaust housing.November 24, 2016 at 6:32 pm #47972
The 9.5 horse power outboard OMC built from 1964 through 1970 used the 4 bolt gear case used on the 1958 through 1963 10 Horse model. . . 😉
