I purchased, it looked like green Tenth Edition service manual Johnson from e-bay awhile back, good book.                 Went to a swap meet and noticed a Red service manual Johnson, Fifth Edition. Question; Did Johnson ever                  make a First Edition service manual, if so, what year motors were covered?, or did they start with the Fifth                    Edition service manual?.

I haven’t seen the fifth edition yet but I do have a PDF third edition which covers 1922 – 1955.  It was scanned in black and white so have no idea what color it was originally. Both my PDF and hard copies of the tenth edition are red and cover 1922 – 1964.  There must be other editions but I haven’t crossed paths with any yet.  What years does your fifth edition cover?

I have the same service manual in PDF and it’s dated 1954.  Another Evinrude service manual I have in PDF is dated 1942 and originally cost a whopping three dollars.

Mumbles, retiredoz, can’t say I ever seen service manuals go back that far in Evinrude. The book I have, that I               just looked at again, the powerhead overhaul starts with, to me looks like a early 50’s Evinrude, with outside shift lever F-N-R on starboard side, looks to me like a 3 hp, but must be a 5 1/2 hp. Did they make a shift lever on the          3 hp, or did it start with the 5.5hp?. The spec sheets start at 1936-up only. Which brings me to another Question.        Do the older manuals start with Overhaul and Repair service on the original motors they built back then?.                     Those service manuals are definitely a plus when you run across any of those old devils. Gene.
