I was wondering if a hard copy or electronic copy is available of the Service Manual for the Elto Pal and Ace from 1937-1940.
Thank you.October 24, 2017 at 6:38 pm #66569In those years the service manual was a "one size fits all" book covering virtually everything a dealer would need to set up his business. The real nitty-gritty was in the service bulletins they periodically sent out. In the manual after setting up a showroom and service department, they started with the principles of two cycle engine oeration and then went over carburation, Ignition, powerhead rebuilding, water pump operation and gear case maintenance. There was a trouble shooting guide to point you to the proper section of the manual to correct each problem. In the late ’40s they started a series of service clinics which covered the fine points of service for some models. A booklet was available that duplicated those slide show presentations. (The "Evinrude Presents" series – Magneto Maintenance "Flywheel type" – Magneto Maintenance "rotor type" – Carburetor Maintenance "Check valve type" – Etc.)The booklets were twenty five cents and are now rare and expensive when found on Ebay. They did not come out with a comprehensive single model service manual until the 1960s.
In 1937 the parts books were (poor) copies of pictures of the parts numbered to give the part number on another page. They shortly changed to using copies of blue prints. Because of the size of the page, small details were hard to see. in 1948 they started a switch to an "exploded" view that is used today. I had thought about converting the blue prints to an exploded view but I don’t have room for a drafting table and am having trouble finding time to learn Autocad which uses the computer to do the work of solid geometery needed for the conversion. Service manuals would then follow . . . š

October 24, 2017 at 8:28 pm #66575Thank you for the information. Being new to antique outboards any and all information particularly regarding troubleshooting problems, finding facsimile parts, and staying true to the original model is what I’m after. Do any parts blow-up contain information about part dimensions?

Then there is material coming from the experience of our members , , ,

There must be a typo here and maybe the model is a 5D10E? The five horse Elto Sportster in the photos was produced in the late 40’s – early 50’s and uses a wobbler style impeller. I have the P/N somewhere but will have to search for it but I’m sure someone else will have it to.
Here’s a sales brochure from ’49.
January 25, 2021 at 7:59 pm #228780You are correct! I put the wrong number down. 🤷♂️
You are a legend. Between you and frank, I now have a clue as to what Iām looking at.January 25, 2021 at 11:50 pm #228783My mistake, the three horse Elto Campsters used the wobbler/rotor style impeller and your motor uses a standard vein style impeller. It’s the same one used in the Johnson TN’s of the era and the P/N is 375688. Since these aren’t so easy to find anymore, a later 5.5 – 6 horse impeller, P/N 434424 or Sierra 18-3001, can be modified to fit. Here’s a link explaining how to enlarge the bore a bit so it will fit on your driveshaft.
