Hello to all;
Many thanks for the patience I’ve been shown, as I’ve struggled with this seemingly simple issue.So, when setting the points on my ’67 80 HP OMC, (using a multimeter and roping it around) do I set the "first" set of points to break on the indicator mark which is across, (farthest) from it (which isn’t visible, but is about where I put the small red arrows in the pic)? This appears to match the first point break with the first mark.
This seems counter intuitive to me; to not use the mark which seems to be the logical starting point. The "first" set of points doesn’t seem to correspond to the "first" indicator mark, in the clockwise sequence. To my untrained eye.
I’ll appreciate any words anyone wants to throw my way. I may be dense, but I’m tryin’.
Thanks;

Yes, you are correct, and that’s what my Clymer manual says.
That’s turned out to be trickier than it sounds, for me anyway.On this motor, there are two marks on the distributor housing which show the exact place the points need to break, and using these is the only way I’ve ever gotten it timed right.
I’ve never had a problem setting points by feeler gauge, on every other motor I’ve ever dealt with. But not this one.
All opinions welcome and appreciated.

My first indicator mark seems to be in a somewhat different place than the example pictured, (although the second marks are the same). Am I seeing that wrong?
In my pic, the distributor pulley is lined up with the first indicator mark, but it’s the "second" set of points which has the rubbing block coming up to one of the high spots of the cam. The first set of points is already on a higher point of the cam; is this really where they are supposed to break?? If I set them this way, it doesn’t seem to work out.
Do I have the distributor pulley timed wrong? In the second pic, the flywheel timing mark is lined up with the mark on the water jacket cover, and the mark on the pulley is lined up with the first "points break" mark. The mediocre Clymer manual is unclear about which mark to use, on the distributor housing.
Many, many thanks for the repeated patience;
