So I was out on the water with my daughter one night this week and she put it into reverse from forward VERY quickly and then the motor over revved when she put it in forward again. At first I thought the cable/controls were broken but it was only the shear pin. Of course I did ‘t have another. 😮

The motor is a 1957 Johnson FD-11. For the life of me, I can’t seem to find which one I need. Anybody know for sure?

      Thanks!

That motor takes a drive pin, not a shear pin.

It should be made of SS, 3/16" diameter by 1 3/16" long.

          Part number 203663

Ok. I’ll admit I don’t know the difference. Can you explain it Chris? Will a drive pin shear/break?

Yeah, the shear pins are meant to shear, when the prop hits an obstruction. For motor without hubs in the prop for example.

Your prop is protected with a hub, so the pin in your motor simply drives the prop, it isn’t meant to shear.

If you put a shear pin in a drive pin motor, it wont hurt anything, but you may need to change it much more than usual.

You don’t want to put a SS drive pin in a motor that requires a shear pin though, or if you hit something, you could cause catastrophic damage to the powherhead.

I would just purchase a piece of 3/16” piece of stainless rod and cut a few of them
