Is there a way to remove the shift rod bushing without removing the prop shaft? I am trying to avoid messing with the detent balls. (I don’t have the special tool to reinstall the detent balls)

I just got a call from a fellow member and he told me to tap the brass shift rod bushing (5/16 tap) Then use 5/16 threaded rod to pull out. This way I would not have to mess with detent balls and still be able replace the seals and o-rings

i think you can use the clutch dog to install detent balls and spring, make sure you look inside dog shaft hole for proper align of groove for balls

You can tap the brass busing and then remove with a puller you make yourself (simple to do). I dont recommend this on one of these gearcases but it could probably be done.

You CANNOT install the clutch dog detent ballbearings on a 1990 3-lug clutch without the installer tool. On the 2-lug clutch dogs (pre 1981-2ish), you can.

Even with the tool, it is very frustrating. My first one took me literally 3 hours. Ive got it down to 10-15 mins now. There’s only 1 way to get it back together and everything is coated down with gearlube if you catch my drift….

I did not see your post until now.
I made puller and got out the shift rod bushing
that is far as I got today
Why don’t you recommend doing it this way?
