I’m sure this has been asked before but I didn’t find anything when I searched for it. So, when you go to put the flywheel back on, should you grease the spindle before placing the flywheel on? also am I correct in torqueing the nut to 100lbs. or is it more or less?
by the way this is on a 1958 Sportswin.

Absolutely not!!! Flywheel and shaft tapers must be clean and dry. Torque the nut to 40-45 foot pounds on your Sportwin

Sorry ’bout the over emphasis. But you would have destroyed your flywheel and possibly the crankshaft if you had proceeded with your plan. I’m so glad you asked. That’s what we’e here for.

I worked on one that had been greased and it had sheared the woodruff key on the shaft.

Do a search on lapping the taper. I would consider doing that as the tapers will grab each other better with less assembly torque.

The tapers must be clean and oil or grease free! Believe me!

When I was younger and a whole lot smarter, I thought a greased taper would help to remove the flywheel the next time it had to be removed. Well, the flywheel came off easy enough. Just when I needed all 55 horses the Chrysler could put out as we were being swept by the tide into Race Rocks and into the jaws of the alpha male sea lion we had been teasing! The four horse Evinrude stashed up front was instantly on the transom and saved the day!

Another member gave me the same advice about 2 weeks ago re: NOT to grease the interface, and I’m very grateful for it. Especially after explaining the reason. Now as far as the torque spec is concerned….. would that apply to a ’59 Super Seahorse too?
