When I was new to the hobby, the first person who answered my question on this forum was Tubs.He is one of,if not the first to figure out using OMC universal coils to bring spark to the old Johnsons. His YouTube videos are an education in bringing the early outboards back to life.Watch them!

I can’t remember when I heard that the OMC
coils could be used as substitutes for coils that
were no longer available.
After I did every time I had a motor with a
bad coil I’d modify the lam’s to see if they
would work. They do.
That was back in green board days where
posting pictures was even more of a
challenge than here.
You had to post your picture on a website,
then modify the link a certain way. Garry
Spencer was the one that figured it out.
As a group of pictures would be more
helpful, I began struggling with You Tube.
They weren’t really videos, but slide shows.
My first coil video was on modifying
the lam’s for the OMC style coils to use in
these early Johnson’s magnetos. Not
really of much value as these coils are
rarely bad.
This hobby fills a lot of my free time, but
the motivation to spend so much of my
time on it is, others seem to be getting
something out of it.

Bob-
I’m limited to a very small part of the pre. WWII motors.
The bread and butter of this board are the guys like you
Frankr – fleetwin – labrador-guy –opposedtwin – billw –
Crosbyman, and anyone I missed that support the post
war motors. The Merk guys like dave-bernard & fastjohn.
There used to be so many more, like Stanley, that know
every detail of the area of motors they have studied.
And then there is our Buccaneer. He should have a TV
series he does so many motors. We get to see a new
episode every day. Honored to be a small part of the
group that hangs around here
Tubs.June 29, 2023 at 8:27 am #277567Did you send a few of the part out for plating and polish & paint some yourself.
I’d don’t have access to a lathe but have thought about trying to mount the mag cover in a drill press….haven’t figured that part out yet.
June 29, 2023 at 9:15 am #277569I’d like to check these out.
Can you provide a link? I searched entering “Tubs” outboard repair, vintage outboard motor repair, etc, etc.

No paint on this motor.
Every hobby I’ve had an interest in has
had aluminum to polish. My stuff comes out
pretty well but if its next to someone’s stuff
that really knows what he is doing ( like Phil
Gatzow, the gas tank guy) I see I still have
some to learn.
I did the Nickle plating. Watched some You
Tube videos. I can get it done but still have
some to learn as well.
I suspect I’m rather hard to find on You
Tube as 200 views is a big number for me.
They’re mostly for someone that comes here
looking to understand something I have
some experience in or I’m just showing off
my motors hopefully creating some interest
in the motors I enjoy.
Lacking the skills and equipment I have a long
list of imaginative solutions, mostly failures.
Occasionally one will work out but usually not
as good as this one.

June 29, 2023 at 1:00 pm #277580Nice work!
I most often work alone and on occasion need to McGuyver a solution for a task.
I’m impressed with the polish work you’ve done, time and patience. Did you mechanically turn the hub to polish? I have more to do before moving onto polishing so at this point I’m just planning and searching for methods.
Lockwood: I resided in Jackson, MI. for many years and didn’t know about Lockwood while I was there.
Jackson, Michigan back in it’s day was a bustling industrial and manufacturing town and there were also quite a few car manufacturers there. I worked in the automotive industry and appreciated the history of the Jackson.
I still have connection there and plan to reach out to some of the old cronies at 3hp Club to see what they have on Lockwood.
I found your youtube videos. I’m interested in know more about tank dent removal tip if available.
Awesome work, thanks for all the feedback!

The nut was threaded so I likely put a bolt in it to polish.
I have a Harbor Freight 6″ buffer. I was on sale for $40.00
at the time. For that price I thought it was worth a try.
It struggles with a 4” wheel when polishing aluminum.
You really have to lay into aluminum to get to the mirror
finish. It gets smoken hot but it has held up. It was worth
what I paid. Not the $70.00 their asking, if that is the
same as I have? Could be better. Could be worse.
You just don’t know. I haven’t bought much there. I did
get a 2 ton aluminum floor jack that I can’t say anything
bad about. There is some stuff on dents and getting the
metal straight, but there old and too long. I plan on making
a new one at some point. Check You Tube for videos on
polishing and removing dent’s from motorcycle gas tanks.
