Like a dummy. I took apart a perfectly good starter to clean the commutator.
Before I bend those brass studs anymore. Can someone give me any advice on putting on the springs.

I think I would just start the spring on the tangs using a needle nose
pliers, recoiling the spring enough to get the end back in the brush
    holder.

    Prepare to be boarded!

Can you use pieces of string to hold the springs in place and pull them out as you slide the motor together? I’ve done it before on a briggs and stratton starter.

Lift the springs out of the brush holders and rest the ends on top of the brush holders. That takes the pressure off the brushes so they can slide onto the communtator. Then release the springs.
