I bought an inexpensive strap wrench with an aluminum handle and a very good strap from the plumbing department at Home Depot. It works perfect and as I remember, it cost about $15 bucks or so.

I use a serpentine belt on an old strap wrench handle – gives me the ability to go around an oil drum if I wanted to.

But it’s occasionally difficult to get the strap on a flywheel tight enough to hold while I shift my grip – especially the skinny flywheels of the battery ignition motors – really need three or four hands to do it right, so I’ve been thinking of fabricating one that uses a ratchet strap and a long handle.

Ran across this – an interesting concept for those of us who like to make their own tools:

I used FrankR’s idea, but used an old leather belt; if it slips, just add some ‘spit’ to inside of the belt!

Bought mine at Harbor Freight….very reasonable and have used it in excess of 200 times and still in good shape.

              quote Mumbles:

I bought a cheap one from Princess Auto (Harbor Freight) just to get the handle and threw the crappy strap away. Replaced it with a length of used serpentine belt from my truck. No slip, no stretch! 😀

I just bought one very similar to the one Mumbles shows at Menards. $16 throw away the original strap and add your own… mine appears to be cast iron…should last a few lifetimes
