What is the correct lubricant (oil or grease) in the swivel bracket on the 1956 Johnson 3 hp? The top of the bracket has a small hole that is stamped “OIL” next to it. But I only found grease inside the bracket during dissembly. Additionally, all of the swivel brackets on the larger engines appear to be equipped with a grease fitting. So which is the recommended lubricant?

any marine grade  grease should do it .. in fact any automotive grease  should do.

Thanks. Any theory/explanation for why the bracket has a hole at the top that has “OIL” stamped next to it?

Good question, I remember that little oiling sign, seems like it would be mighty tough to lube the swivel this way….  Trying to remember if there is a grease fitting as well.  If not, and the swivel is stiff, probably best to disassemble, clean and relube…
