      hello, a friend gave me a ted williams 7.5 single cylinder air cooled engine. it has no spark. it has a coil on the side of the engine that is cracked. do these engines have points? not sure of year. thanks

        If it has the coil on the side like that; I don’t think it has points. It’s “Solid State”.

        I had one like that and I got it running by swapping that coil with an OMC coil; not the “Universal Magneto” coil…..but an OMC coil from a later model engine that had two coils mounted on the powerhead much like your Ted Williams does. I had a couple of those coils sitting around; I probably wouldn’t have invested that much in the Teddy otherwise.

        They are reliable enougn I suppose but very loud and lots of vibration. Also; there is an impeller that serves to cool the mid-section. If that is not functioning youi will eventually destroy the engines’ bottom seal.

        There should be an ID plate on the transom mount that will ID the motor andallow you to consult a parts listing.

          It’s probably an Eska, with a Tecumseh engine. You may be able to use lawn mower engine ignition parts.

            ok great. i have spare coils from a 1983 90hp johnson. would that work?
