It was such a beautiful day, I decided to try out three different outboards I went through this
winter, Waterwitch 571-10, 1962 Eska 5hp, Mercury Mark 6.
Have you ever completely gone through an outboard and
have everything test out perfect? No me…… not ever close, lol.Eska fired up after about 10 pulls, sounded pretty good.
Died a few times, so got a screwdriver so I could adjust the carb.
Went to restart, and rewind rope pulled all the way out and wont
retract.:-(Tried the Waterwitch next. Started up in a few pulls, ran so so,
trying to fine tune. Started out pumping water pretty good,
but slowly quit pumping water. 🙁Threw the Mark 6 in the barrel next. Hooked up the
gas tank, squeezed primer, and found a gas leak right
away. Had to pull the choke assembly and baffle plate
of to get at it of course. Fixed Leak, put it back in the
barrel. Fired up right away, sounded good, but needed
some tuning. Checked for water pump output and
found no water squirting out anywhere. Seemed
pretty warm after a couple of minutes, and then
it died. 🙁
Does the Mark 6 have a tale-tale to know if the pump
is working? Brand spanking new impeller btw.
Am staying out of the garage tomorrow……. too depressing, lolPrepare to be boarded!
April 14, 2015 at 10:50 pm #13962Depressed ? I got a cure. Just go to your local outboard dealer and price new OBs in the same HP range. That trip will quickly make leaks, impellers and recoil springs seem insignifgant. My local Evinrude dealer has a "sale" on 3 hp kickers. $1875.00 cdn 😮 The sign is large and they are re proud of offering deal LOL. Shop rates for repairs are posted a few feet away $105.00 cdn/hour. First 30 mins is a cleaning fee.

April 15, 2015 at 1:35 pm #14002we have all had days like that, I had one that started great at home but at the lake pulled 10 times or more every time I tried to start it. the merc 110 almost became an anchor minus the rope that day, finally took a look at it upper crank shaft seal is leaking real bad.
Doug
