To my best knowledge, this is a mid 70’s to mid 80’s commercial tiller model (OMC). But looking at some parts pictures, a lot of it looks like a 60’s motor with CD ignition. I ask because I recently saw one come up for sale for about a hundred bucks on a local classified.

Are these left over parts that are an unholy marriage with techonogy between a couple of different generations?

OK, thought I responded, but see nothing here…
In any event, that is a mid 1980s commercial 40hp, it is stock from the factory ( except for the gearcase). You are exactly right, this is just an 70s style 40hp updated with CD ignition. Once again, this is how they came from the factory, no one updated/customized it…So, I’m thinking it should be fairly bullet proof with that ignition system. $150 does not seem unreasonable if you find the engine to be mechanically sound and you have a market for such an engine….

Yep, that’s what they did, built bare bones, proven reliable, cheap to maintain motors and slapped a "Commercial" label on them. We all know how bullet proof the old 40hp design was.

Even has the winged gearcase. That was supposed to act like a Whale Tail, to help get a heavy boat up on plane. All it actually did was slow it down because of drag. What it really did well here in the swamps was gather weeds. Most of them gave in to a saw and disk grinder.
