I am considering buying one tomorrow. Any thoughts or experiences with them? It is supposed to be in running condition.

If you like a Zephyr the Light Four is about the same. I had one it ran smooth but not much power for 9.7 HP

Not bad looking for its age.

While they do have 4 cylinders, they are by no means LIGHT! 😯 They are okay motors, as mercuryman said, they are just a scaled up Zephyr. Coils are usually good, impeller is metal – carb is a little funky though.

I prefer the simpler and lighter Johnson K series in that era, but the Lightfour is okay – it is really smooth. (I don’t think either of them really put out the rated 9.8/9.7hp.) If you haven’t owned one, you probably should – then you can tell us what you think!

I made the ride and picked it up. The seller is a club member and a super nice guy. He made me a good deal and treated me like a friend. Very good experience. My first true antique outboard.

I am second only to Garry as a Lightfour fan. They are light regardless of what LOTEC says – he is just sour grapes on them. 😀
They are 58 lb in the rope start version – the Johnson Ks start at 63 lb. So the Lightfour is lighter! They are also the smoothest 10 hp class motor I have aver run. And may be the quietest. Thats my 2 cents.

I am just curious what you paid for this motor? I have my eye on a pair of them that are in decent complete non running condition. It looks like they are a little older than the one you bought and have little to no graphics left on them. I have enjoyed my zephyr so this is the next logical step. I was just wondering. If you would like to PM me so it is kept private that would be great. Thanks.

One of my favorite motors. I have 1936 and 1941 models. The Zephyr came later and uses the same magneto.
