Is this price a bit steep for this motor ? 1961
Or close to reasonable?

What numbers would be ok on compression?
Thanks ..December 26, 2021 at 6:25 pm #251782Any idea if the lower unit has been rebuilt? Salt water use?
Prepare to be boarded!
December 26, 2021 at 6:33 pm #251783The guy said no salt water .
I was going to loosen the drain on LU and see if any water comes out .December 26, 2021 at 7:10 pm #251785The motor looks to have been re-painted. I bit too white? Quality of the paint will be hard to evaluate until you at least see it first-hand. Even then it will be a while before you realize how durable the finish will be.
When you check the lower; also be suspicious of fresh oil. Sometimes people put fresh oil in prior to a sale so it will look god and perhaps conceal a leak.
Maybe someone else will give you compression numbers to look for.
Someone put a lot of work into it. I would ask who did the work and what mechanical work was done…..
December 26, 2021 at 8:55 pm #251787paid $100 CDN (about 65U$) for a long shaft black Merc 40 (4HP) last sept. ( only issue was the recoil now fixed ! )
yes repainted… check ser#/year … was it white to start with ?? why would it need to be repainted …make it look good ? that does not make it good.
comes with fuel tank and connector…?? if it is the small Merc fuel connector they are expensive…to some extent
In Canada that hose connector has a asking price of $138 and taxes…on Amazon.ca !!
I ordered it from Amazon.com $58 CDN incl shipping
tank and a hose & connector if not supplied ………. would set you back another 100$U$ +
$475 US means 600$ CDN & it means to much for me š
update: yep white originaly…. the small fuel connector was used up to 9.8s if I am not wrong

December 27, 2021 at 6:04 am #251800Thanks , this is the kind of feedback that is really helpful .
This motor has a fuel pump right ? So no pressure tank ..
Iām only guessing but it should have the same fuel connector as my 62 450 Merc ?December 27, 2021 at 10:22 am #251803Yes it has a fuel pump. I think however that the fuel connector is different (smaller) than on your 450 unless someone has made modifications.
The smaller motors of that vintage used a smaller diameter connector. They are available or you can modify the 6HP to use another connector; at least until you fine the correct parts.

His pictures are of sufficient resolution to see that the paint work is kind of sloppy. He didn’t sand the nicks and scratches very well….and of course the color is wrong. Too bad.December 27, 2021 at 12:44 pm #251818Merc 60 side logo…. strange… number 0 is..a smaller size than the # 6 almost looks…….. fabricated and stuck on the side.
why would one paint it the wrong white color …even without doing some bondo on the deeper scratches…?
btw I use Dollar store…. black fingernail polish to do touch up on the Mercury black.. works pretty well. š

December 27, 2021 at 1:07 pm #251819OK, well it is obviously repainted, and not a real great job. I would be hesitant to spent that kind of money on an engine with a quick paint job and little else. There were no pictures of under the hood or explanations of repair work performed, which makes me think there was very little done to it. I am no expert on the old Mercs for sure, perhaps someone that is will chime in. Jacksonville is near the ocean, so I would doubt that the engine has only been used in fresh water….
December 27, 2021 at 5:15 pm #251823All good points .
No way I would have left those dings and dents and paint over them .. .
Speaking of paint . I got some Cloud White alternative for the 62 . PPG mix that I got the numbers out of the paint section stickies here .
A VW white I think .. Sure seems a lot brighter white than original ā¦ Cashmere White . -
