I Think the seller is about 400 off.
December 27, 2021 at 5:54 pm #251825Many old outboards out there reasonable, cheap or FREE
Most old outboards are not rare or valuable
Many have issues…some minor some major.
It will be a long time before Inflation reaches old outboard market.
Have fun, its a Hobby.

That’s exactly what I was going to say. We have an expression at the boatyard: “You can’t polish a turd.” That guy tried. Heck, it’s not even a 9.8, which would have been roughly the same-looking but a little more valuable. I guarantee if you pressure tested that lower unit, it would leak like a sieve.
Long live American manufacturing!

Thanks Bill, I thought you might have more of a concrete idea about this engine….
December 28, 2021 at 10:46 am #251840hey if it runs ok…. good compression….. gearcase takes pressure.. offer $150-$175 max ..other bargains will come in easyer to fix Evinrudes/johnsons unless it is sentimental issue ๐

December 30, 2021 at 6:07 am #251948Thanks guys . I havenโt checked it out yet . The only real reason I was interested was it was close by .
I may still check it out .
With my limited knowledge on these outboards getting opinions here is very valuable .December 30, 2021 at 10:41 am #251958Samuel….a lot depends on what you want. If this is a motor model that you have had a hankering for since you were a kid…..that is of course a different scenario. I have had a couple of the 6 HP Mercs and they are a sweet running motor. Probably one of the smoothest running fishing motors around. Go check it out. Talk with the seller and see what else he has. Swap stories. See if he is an AOMCI Member and; if not….ask him to consider joining. A great way to spend an hour on the weekend . Who knows where that will lead.
December 30, 2021 at 11:51 am #251963The Mark 6 is a super-smooth runner too; but it may be in the top ten of hard-to-work-on engines of all time. The six Merc that is the subject of this thread is much easier to work on than a Mark 6 but still, harder than an OMC, by quite a bit. It’s not that I object to it….I mean, I do consider myself basically a Merc guy with a dose of reality….but that one is just WAY over-priced.
Long live American manufacturing!
December 30, 2021 at 12:11 pm #251965Like Seakaye says, I surely don’t want to discourage you from buying this engine, if it is indeed a model that you have a connection with, or really want. I just think it is way over priced unless the seller can prove it has had mechanical work done that is much better than the paint job that was slapped on. Listen to Bill, this is not an engine to take on for the casual enthusiast, it is much more complex than the similar models offered by OMC of that era. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a great running/performing engine, just more complex.
