I had a rich idle condition with a Tillotson MD series carburetor. Went thru it step by step and nothing changed. Poor idle with no effect from adjustment. I just happened to remove the idle tube one last time (509-611) and found the idle tube gasket (480-612) standing on edge in the hole. It was stuck there but allowed the idle tube to be inserted in its cavity. Once I got it out and positioned correctly, the motor idled normally with full range adjustment. First time encounter with this issue and thought I would never get it to idle correctly. Motor is a 1955 Firestone 16hp. Wanted to pass this along.

That little gasket is very important for making the Tillotsons work properly. It’s a good thing you didn’t lose it as they are so small and usually lost forever if they get dropped on the floor, which I have done.

I have a feeling that is why the previous owner gave up on it. Told me it ran rough but never tried to fix it. I had the idle tube out several times but never looked in there to check the washer. Learn something new all the time.
