I have the lower unit off right now for a new impeller and I will see if I can wobble the exhaust hosing either by hand or with a broom handle from below. If I can’t wobble or move it I am going to stop on the project for now I have to get some stuff done here to get out of here for this season which that darn hurricane in November has put me behind or I would already be gone. If I can wobble the exhaust housing then I will pull the power head before leaving. I don’t have the grommet either for the upper tube it isn’t in the gasket kit and I would rather take my time on that.
The owner is going to leave it here in my shed in Florida until I return down in about 3-4 months. If he needs it I have a friend here that can open up my shed and give it to him but he has 2 good runners right now that I went thru so he has a spare and this would make 3 if need be.
You mentioned you might have some parts for this engine do you have part number 396555
The owner would like to have an 8hp we already have the reed valve assembly part number 393359 and the 8hp exhaust tuner inner part number 329048 coming. The carb the shop put on the engine is supposedly an 8hp carb I am not sure if it is or is not I did measure where the air goes into the carb and on the old 6hp carb he brought me that I rebuilt was about 30mm and the same on the carb that is currently on the engine the back of the old 6hp carb that bolts up to the engine was about 20mm. I have not taken the new carb off to see what jets are in it yet or how big the back diameter of it is.
Thanks,
Joeps I used a very long flat head screwdriver and could not budge the exhaust tube in any direction.
June 30, 2021 at 7:30 pm #241655Sorry but the crankcase is actually different between the 6 and 8hp…The intake manifold is much larger on the 8hp, it won’t fit onto the 6hp crankcase….D
July 1, 2021 at 7:55 am #241671Thanks,
I guess I will sale the reed valve assembly since it won’t fit the block it cost 30 dollars. The motor as far as rust on mid section seems to be in pretty good shape for living the rough life it has it was made in Belgium. I’m guessing that may be a good thing it must have gotten a good coat of zinc primer. The impeller is suppose to be here today I will put it on and drop it back in the tank if it runs well I will go ahead and run it out of fuel and store it until I get back.
I did get the fresh water block I ordered for it yesterday and its in really good shape. The NOS ring set should be here this week I thought they might be better than the new rings their selling now but don’t know for sure. I will put that stuff up for him in case he needs it later down the road now we know his block is o.k.
Thanks Again,
Joe-

July 1, 2021 at 8:49 am #241675Boy, you have made a big investment in this thing….Hopefully you can resell that powerhead and rings….Maybe to me…
In any event, pulling one of these powerheads apart is real watch maker work. Individual small needle bearings on each crank pin and the center main, and plenty of them… I really don’t think his powerhead needs rebuilding. You have had the exhaust cover and head off, there were no signs of stuck rings or scoring/scuffing…. Just rough up the cylinder walls with a little fine emery cloth…The owner is lucky to have such a devoted friend indeed…..July 1, 2021 at 11:56 am #241683Fleetwin,
I will talk to him about what he wants to do with the extra parts. Were not going to rebuild the engine at this time maybe never I just need to talk to him which I will do after I get done today with his motor. His cylinders looked to be in great shape when I had cylinder head off and the rings still has spring in them when I used a pick to push in on them thru exhaust cover while it was off. After cleaning the water passages both cylinders are running close to same temp before top cylinder was running like 15 degrees hotter.
What we have is the reed assembly for an 8hp that we can’t use on a 6hp engine block so I can sell the reed assembly for sure.
I got the NOS rings that look to be from the 80s packaging for 14 dollars a pair so 28 dollars for both sets and the 6hp fresh water block was 74 dollars basically 102 dollars for the rings and block which is great shape I will take pics and post later.
I also got the 6hp carb that is rebuilt.
I am going to put the 8hp inner exhaust tuner that goes under exhaust plate on it also today when it gets here and the new impeller and see how that does in the tank.
He is a nice guy and is physically fit and has offered to help me here do some building etc. He lost his wife 1 year ago also so I’m just trying to help him out a bit.
Thanks for your help,
JoeJuly 1, 2021 at 12:40 pm #241688Joe, I don’t think that 8hp inner exhaust filler will fit in there properly either…6 and 8hp ports are different… I really wouldn’t mess with this thing, leave it stock… Keep the carb though if it is for a 6hp…Will look for the pictures….Don
July 2, 2021 at 2:27 pm #241754Fleetwin,
I just saw your message. The inner exhaust filler fit in there and its running well I will save the one in that was in there just in case. I took a hard look at the fresh water case and it looks almost brand new. if it has any hours on it there not much even the exhaust area looks like new. I don’t think we could have done any better on the parts. I slipped a new ring in the cylinder and it fits like a glove I am not sure how much ring gap is called for but the pictures will show how well the fit is. I will take some pics and post them. I haven’t talked to him yet about selling that stuff.I’ll post the pics here soon. I have to re-start computer into windows instead of linux to use my iphone.
Thanks,
Joe-

July 2, 2021 at 6:03 pm #241776I think you bought a complete powerhead, no wonder it seemed so reasonable to me….I will certainly take the rings. Don
July 3, 2021 at 8:42 am #241820Don,
I spoke to the owner later yesterday and he is wanting to keep the rings and case just in case he needs them in the future. Thanks for all your help on this motor and other motors you have helped me with.Joe
July 3, 2021 at 9:53 am #241828My pleasure, glad it worked out relatively easily….Nice work Joe
