My brother in law drug home a Johnson outboard from a
landfill / transfer station and donated it to me. It’s missing
the hood, turns over, but otherwise looks complete.
It’s apparently a 25 hp, but I can only match the first 5
model number digits on Marine Engine.
It’s way newer than anything I’m use to working on, but
told him I’d check it out some time. If nothing else, trading
stock, or sell it off for parts.

Can anyone tell me the year?
      Model #
      J25TE1CT3

      Thanks!

Are you sure it isn’t J25TELCT3 ?  That decodes as a Tiller Electric Long shaft 1983.

Frank, I bet you’re right, as it is a tiller control, with electric start,
with start button on the front cowl.
              Will double check tomorrow anyway.
Just gotta wonder how bad of shape it has to be for someone to
toss it in the recycle bin!
              Thanks.

based on a lot of cases…could be  truly simple….to fix …

people just don’t know or bother to fix  things or don’t care  …. maybe it just needs a cowl 🙂  and TLC

eBay listing – Old Outboard Motor. Starting
bid of $10.00. I contacted the guy to ask if he
new what he had? He said someone had thrown
the motor on the aluminum scrap pile at work.
Said he brought it home to see if maybe it might
bring a few dollars. I sent him some info on the
motor and he replied that he had no idea. It
ended selling for almost $400.00. Might have
brought more if he had re-listed it as a Model
                  6N-HR Champion Hot rod.

A "Boat House Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

I rechecked the Model number of the subject Johnson today.
It must have been the paint fumes the first time I tried reading the number.

                    It’s……

                    J25TELCTE

                    Looks like it decodes as…..

Johnson, 25 hp, Tiller Electric, 1983, Electric?

If I ever get a motor stand freed up, I’ll check it out!

The last “E” identifies any mid-year engineering changes if there were any changes.  Otherwise, it means nothing.
